Giovanni Russo is School Champ of National Geographic Bee

Fifth grader Giovanni Russo correctly answered a question about an ancient lost city in Central America to become this year’s Woodland School winner of the National Geographic School Bee.
Russo was among 10 Woodland School finalists who competed on Jan. 19 in the annual contest run by Grade 5 teachers Brian Kilroy and Nicole Panos. Russo takes an online qualifying test this week for the opportunity to advance to the next level of the competition.
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Finalists tackled challenging questions that included:
1. Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States, is located in the Cascade Mountains in which western state?; 2. The metropolitan area of Louisville extends from Kentucky into which neighboring state?; 3. Volcanic in origin, the Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean and administered by what country?; 4. The easternmost point on the Horn of Africa is part of which country?; 5. Archaeologists have begun excavating an ancient lost city in La Mosquitia in which country north of Nicaragua?
