Cub Scouts Annual Pinewood Derby

Submitted by: David Shreck

A highlight on the Cub Scouts yearly calendar is the annual Pinewood Derby where participants combine wood working, design, artistic expression and Physics with friendly competition to see which homemade car is the fastest in a series of downhill races. More than 65 racers, with their families cheering them on, enjoyed the carnival-like atmosphere as food, beverages, and race-themed deserts were available. For the first time in Pack 129 history an invitation was extended to local Girl Scouts troops from Green Brook and Dunellen – Service Unit #62 to participate.
This invitation was enthusiastically accepted and the event was a complete success.
Cub Scout Pack 129 Committee Chairman, Brent Cheshire commented “It was great having the Girl Scouts involved this year. Both the Girls and Boys enjoyed the day. I look forward to having the camaraderie back again next year”.
“The Pinewood Derby reinforces to Girl Scouts that they can do anything as witnessed on the event day in each car design and the girls’ sportsmanship. The Girl Scout troops of Green Brook and Dunellen are grateful to Cub Scout Pack 129 for giving our girls the opportunity to participate in the race and build the community.” Marie Hartlieb, Girl Scout Leader, Troop 65452.
Cub Scouts Pack 129, based in Green Brook, is open to all boys aged 7-10 (grades 1-5). For information about Pack 129 you may visit pack129greenbrook.scoutlander.com or contact Brent Cheshire at (908) 222-3320.
