The Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Day is Saturday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The collection accepts items such as herbicides, paint thinners and solvents, oil-based paint and stains, automotive fluids, propane tanks, pool chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaning fluids, fire extinguishers and aerosol spray paints. It does not accept latex paint, asbestos, medical or infectious waste, explosives, radioactive materials, rechargeable household batteries, smoke detectors or carbon monoxide alarms.
The Computer and Electronics Recycling Day follows on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Accepted electronics include computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, televisions, keyboards, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, old cellphones, toasters and irons. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are not accepted at the electronics event.
Proper disposal matters because many household chemicals and devices should not enter the ordinary trash stream. Dedicated collections help keep materials requiring special handling out of homes, trucks and landfills, while allowing recyclable components to be recovered. Residents should check products and devices in advance, follow the county’s acceptance lists, place items in their trunks and remain in their vehicles at the facility.
