Red Cross Urges Fall Blood Donations After Summer Shortage

The American Red Cross is asking eligible donors to make a blood or platelet appointment this fall as the organization works to rebuild supplies following a summer shortage.

Hospitals rely on a steady blood supply for trauma care, cancer treatment, surgeries, childbirth complications and many chronic conditions. Donations are needed year-round because blood products have limited shelf lives and because patient needs cannot be scheduled around holidays, vacations or periods of severe weather.

The Red Cross said its blood supply remains vulnerable after the summer months, when regular donors can be harder to reach. Healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old in most states, meet height and weight requirements, and pass a health-history screening may be eligible to donate. Sixteen-year-olds may be eligible in some locations with parental consent.

Appointments can be made by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS. The Red Cross also offers platelets and plasma appointments for eligible donors; prospective donors can learn more about the differing donation types when scheduling.

From Sept. 21 through Oct. 18, 2026, the organization is offering a $15 e-gift card by email to eligible donors who complete a blood donation, while supplies last. Donors should check the current terms and appointment availability when registering.
