Wagner, a 1969 Roselle Park High School graduate, led the Panthers football program from 1981 through 2005. During his years with the district, he also served students as a teacher, vice principal and athletic director, and later had a stint coaching football at Point Pleasant Beach.
The stadium naming follows a formal request submitted May 12, 2026, to the superintendent and Board of Education by a committee formed to recognize Wagner's legacy within the district. The board acted on the committee's recommendation at its June 16 meeting. "Mr. Wagner served the district with distinction as a teacher, football coach and vice principal/athletic director," the superintendent said in his recommendation. "Throughout his tenure, he demonstrated a deep commitment to students and student-athletes, leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on the school community through his leadership, mentorship and dedication."
In addition to his coaching career, Wagner has remained involved in New Jersey high school football through the North-South All-Star Classic organization.
