Imagine Offers Free Support for Adults Grieving a Suicide Loss

Imagine, A Center for Coping with Loss, offers free peer-support groups for adults who are grieving the death of a close family member due to suicide.

The groups are designed to offer a supportive space for people facing the isolation, stigma and unanswered questions that can accompany a suicide loss. In-person groups are held at Imagine's Mountainside center, and a virtual group is also available.

Imagine’s broader programs serve children ages 3–18, young adults ages 18–30, and parents and caregivers coping with loss. Adult support groups are available in English and Spanish. The nonprofit also operates a center in Newark.

At its Mountainside center, located at 244 Sheffield Street, Imagine brings people together through peer support. Trained adult and teen volunteers facilitate groups under the supervision of its Clinical Program Team. The program is not counseling or therapy, but can complement the care participants receive from a therapist.

Children meet in groups organized by developmental age, while parents and caregivers participate in separate groups at the same time. This structure allows different members of a family to receive support suited to their experiences.

Families can join throughout the program year and stay as long as needed. Participation is scheduled rather than drop-in, with regular programming from September through June and additional summer activities. People unsure whether Imagine is the right fit can contact the center for information about other grief resources and clinical professionals.
