Red Cross Urges Fall Blood Donations After Summer Shortage

The American Red Cross is asking eligible donors to make a blood or platelet appointment this fall as the organization works to rebuild supplies following a summer shortage.

Hospitals rely on a steady blood supply for trauma care, cancer treatment, surgeries, childbirth complications and many chronic conditions. Donations are needed year-round because blood products have limited shelf lives and because patient needs cannot be scheduled around holidays, vacations or periods of severe weather.

The Red Cross said its blood supply remains vulnerable after the summer months, when regular donors can be harder to reach. For whole blood donation, individuals generally must be at least 17 years old in most states, weigh at least 110 pounds and feel well enough to carry out normal activities. Additional height and weight requirements apply to younger donors. Sixteen-year-olds may be eligible in some locations with parental consent.

Eligibility also depends on medical conditions, certain medications, travel and personal health history. A past deferral does not necessarily mean someone can never donate again. Prospective donors can review the Red Cross eligibility guidelines or call 1-866-236-3276 with questions. Final eligibility is determined at the donation appointment.

Whole blood donors must wait at least 56 days between donations and can generally donate up to six times a year. The Red Cross recommends allowing about an hour for the visit, even though the blood collection itself takes less time. Anyone feeling unwell on donation day should reschedule.

Appointments can be made by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS. The Red Cross also offers platelets and plasma appointments for eligible donors; prospective donors can learn more about the differing donation types when scheduling.
